How we rank agencies

Plain rules, applied the same way to every agency in the ranked lists.

Where the data comes from

Each listing's name, address, phone number, office hours, star rating and review count come from the agency's public Google Business Profile. We last checked all listings in September 2026. Ratings change often, so each listing links to its live Google Maps page.

How the order is calculated

Sorting purely by star rating would put an agency with two five-star reviews above one with a 4.8 from nearly two hundred reviews. That isn't useful to families. Instead we use a weighted rating (a Bayesian average):

Weighted score = (v ÷ (v + 10)) × R + (10 ÷ (v + 10)) × 4.6
R is the agency's Google rating, v is its number of reviews, and 4.6 is roughly the average rating across all agencies we track.

An agency with few reviews is pulled toward the average; as reviews accumulate, its own rating counts for more. Ties are broken by review count.

A featured listing appears above the ranked list on some pages, in a separate highlighted box labeled "Featured listing." Featured placement is the result of a business relationship. It is not based on ratings and does not affect the order of any other agency. Featured agencies are held to the same accuracy standard as every other listing.

What a ranking doesn't tell you

Online reviews reflect individual experiences and can include reviews from employees. They say nothing about licensing, Medicare certification, clinical quality or whether an agency serves your address. Use the rankings to build a shortlist, then verify with the Virginia Department of Health and Medicare Care Compare, and ask the questions in our checklist.

Links

Links to agency Google Maps profiles are marked nofollow. We don't sell links in the ranked lists.
